I’m a big fan of hacks. I love computer hacks, I love the movie Hackers, and Hacksaw Jim Duggan is my favorite wrestler. My cat hacks up a hairball? I dont care! I just love hacks!

Hacks are awesome because they’re life’s lil shortcuts to save you time and money. And I’m always on the lookout for awesome DIY Screen Printing hacks.

Below are some of my favorite Screen Printing hacks and DIY home projects from around the web.

Am I going to try some of these out myself? Hack yes! (sorry)

Homemade 4 Color Screen Printing Press

First things first, Bob Clagett from I Like to Make Stuff is a boss. He makes do it yourself projects look easy and I encourage everybody to follow his youtube channel to see him make some killer projects of all kinds. But this project in particular is amazing because Bob creates a low cost 4 color screen printing press.

Now the plans for this homemade 4 color printing press originally come from printingplans.com but really the true value is watching Bob tackle the job and see how it all comes together. Following along while someone else builds it makes it so much easier to visualize. Again those plans to build the press are completely free and can be downloaded at http://printingplans.com

Amazing Garage Print Shop

Next up comes this forum thread from Alex and Clint at gigposters.com. This is probably one of the most inspirational posts you can see about someone building a print shop in their garage.

Its a mix of do it yourself builds but theres also some thrifting thrown in there to find used cheap screen printing equipment. Probably my most favorite component of this dude’s garage print shop is the washout tub.

He’s made it portable by putting it on casters so it can be rolled into the driveway when he’s spraying. I love that its such a frankenstein of cheap parts and awesome DIY ingenuity.
Check out the thread here.

Home Made Exposure Unit(s)

Madeline Donahue is a painter and studied screen printing at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Madeline has a handful of videos showing people how to screen print from home and they are very low tech, which is just what I like to see!

I like this one in particular because its a pretty sturdy build of a home made exposure unit/light table. She’s using daylight fluorescent bulbs in this unit, although it would probably be a tad more efficient to use some unfiltered blacklights.

And finally there is this super cheap exposure unit built using a halogen lamp and wood. Really there isn’t much to do but grab some scraps of wood and nail it together.

Quick and easy and will definitely help you come in under budget.

I’m always on the lookout for more DIY screen printing projects or hacks like these. These are just a handful of my favorites at the moment but I’ve been finding a ton of great ones.

If you have any screen printing projects of your own or know of something good I’ve missed, share it with us and put a link down in the comments.

You know what we get stuck on? Finding a lowcost diy drying rack solution. Any ideas?

This is actually something that I’ve been looking into for myself too, Fred. I’m not exactly sure if you are referring to screen drying racks or print drying racks so I gathered up some of my favorites of both onto a Pinterest board. These are all varying degrees of sturdiness. One of my favorite ideas is using a laundry drying rack and clothes-pinning prints to it. Seems like a pretty good cheap route to go. Here’s that Pinterest board. You can clickthrough and see the links to build plans for most of them:
